Am I covered if I have a pre-existing medical condition?

For information relating to policies purchased prior to 17 June 2021, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For policies purchased from 17 June 2021 please see below.

We understand that many British travellers may have an ongoing medical or dental condition, but unfortunately pre-existing medical conditions cannot be covered unless otherwise expressly stated in your policy.

As such, Coronavirus (COVID-19) is not an automatically covered pre-existing medical condition and is subject to the same ‘pre-existing medical condition’ definition as all other medical conditions. This definition is outlined in your policy and applies to you, your travelling party, a close relative or any other person upon whom your trip depends.

As part of our insurance coverage, we will assess any medical-related claim which may include verifying:

  • When you booked segments of your trip;
  • When you bought your travel insurance;
  • When you first knew of any pre-existing medical condition(s).

What is a pre-existing medical condition?

The following can help determine if you, your travel companion, a close relative or someone upon whom your trip depends has a pre-existing medical condition. If any of the following exist at the time you buy your policy, start your trip, extend your policy or resume your trip, then it is considered a pre-existing medical condition:

  • A medical or dental condition, or related complication, for which advice, treatment or medication has been prescribed by a medical practitioner, dentist or a chiropractor within the 180 days, and of which you are aware before: (a) purchasing your policy; (b) starting your trip; (c) extending your policy; or (d) resuming your trip after returning home early; or
  • An ongoing medical or dental condition, or related complication the symptoms of which you are aware at the time of: (a) purchasing your policy; (b) starting your trip; (c) extending your policy; or (d) resuming your trip after returning home early; or
  • An ongoing medical or dental condition, or related complication which is currently being or has been investigated by a medical practitioner, dentist or a chiropractor; and of which you are aware at the time of: (a) purchasing your policy; (b) starting your trip; (c) extending your policy; or (d) resuming your trip after returning home early.

Don’t forget, if you had symptoms of a condition or were undergoing investigations for it at the time you bought your policy, we consider that to be a pre-existing medical condition.

Also be aware that any medical claim submitted will have the policy excess applied per person, per event.

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the Policy Wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered, get in touch.

Find a travel insurance provider if you have a serious medical condition

World Nomads policies cannot cover claims due to Pre-Existing Medical Conditions (PEMC), regardless of whether the condition is serious or not (this includes if you're on separate or joint policies). You can still purchase a World Nomads policy, but the PEMC exclusion is not removable.

For travel insurance providers that offer cover on PEMC, visit the Money and Pensions Service (MaPS) Money Helper website, or call 0800 138 7777. BIBA's (The British Insurance Brokers' Association) Find Insurance Service offers information on serious PEMCs and travel insurance providers that may cover these conditions. You can also contact them on 0370 950 1790.
