This content is for UK travellers. Our policies are designed so that you can explore your boundaries with confidence. If you think you might do more adventurous activities along the way or need more coverage, then make sure you choose the right level of cover to match, otherwise you may have to buy a whole new policy when you’re on the road if your plans change.

Gap Year travel insurance: What's covered?

We know many of our gap year travelers aim to do some volunteering or work along the way to help extend their trip. As long as you select the right policy and coverage, you can do that bar work in Australia or help build water wells in Africa without voiding your insurance. Whatever your gap year looks like, World Nomads travel insurance offers 24/7 Worldwide assistance and can help cover your:

  • Overseas medical expenses
  • Cancellation
  • Expenses
  • Luggage

There are of course terms and conditions around the limits and conditions of coverage. It's a good idea to read the policy wording before you buy so you know how you're covered.

What you’re not covered for

There’s a number of exclusions so make sure you read your policy and know what you aren’t covered for. Common things we won’t cover include:

  • Anything illegal (you didn’t really think we’d cover that did you?)
  • If you've taken drugs or alcohol
  • That rash you picked up while having hostel sex (ah, sorry)
  • Where you've been acting like an idiot
  • Non-emergency medical treatment that can wait until you return home (it's not health insurance, it's for travel emergencies)
  • Certain pre-existing medical conditions
  • Ongoing treatment at home

This is not a full list of what's not covered. Be sure to read the exclusions and terms of coverage.

Returning home early?

Gap year travelers often find their plans change frequently as they explore overseas with no strict itinerary. You must be aware that if you decide to come home early, there are no partial refunds for the time you didn’t use.

Cut off by a dog.

I was cut off by a dog whilst riding a push bike. Subsequent to my initial consultation with the Doctor I was referred to Hospital where I received surgery for my fractured foot and had my hand placed in a cast. I received assistance from specialty assist for my hospital bills and repatriation.

Pre-existing medical conditions

World Nomads policies cannot cover claims due to Pre-Existing Medical Conditions (PEMC), regardless of whether the condition is serious or not (this includes if you're on separate or joint policies). You can still purchase a World Nomads policy, but the PEMC exclusion is not removable.

For travel insurance providers that offer cover on PEMC, visit the Money and Pensions Service (MaPS) Money Helper website, or call 0800 138 7777. BIBA's (The British Insurance Brokers' Association) Find Insurance Service offers information on serious PEMCs and travel insurance providers that may cover these conditions. You can also contact them on 0370 950 1790.
